Letter of Endorsement from the Astronomical Society of the Pacific
At its meeting on 13 July 2001, the Board of Directors of the Astronomical Society of the Pacific (ASP) unanimously passed a resolution wholeheartedly endorsing the concept of the Astronomy Education Review journal as you have defined it.
Your clear presentation on the nature and purpose of such a journal generated considerable enthusiasm among the Board members. There exist journals for the publication of articles on physics education, but these are rarely read by astronomers, and some of the topics to be included in your Review are not considered appropriate by the editors of the physics journals. Thus, the Board feels that such a journal has long been needed in astronomy and space science education, and that it can make a significant contribution toward improving astronomy education nationwide and even worldwide. Its success can only increase public support for, and understanding of, astronomical research.
The ASP is committed to supporting the Astronomy Education Review by doing everything we can to publicize it through our own publications, meetings, and web site, by referencing it in our publications whenever appropriate, and by referring potential authors and readers to it.
Cordially,
Alex Filippenko, President
